Standards?based modeling and deployment of serverless function orchestrations using BPMN and TOSCA

Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) is a cloud service model enabling to implement serverless applications for variety of use cases. These range from scheduled calls single functions complex function orchestrations executed using orchestration services such as AWS step functions. However, since the available technologies vary in functionalities, supported modeling languages, and APIs, their deployment require significant technology-specific expertise. Moreover, resulting models are typically not portable due provider- details, major efforts required when exchanging an orchestrator or provider lock-ins. To tackle this issue, we introduce vendor- technology-agnostic method orchestrations, which relies on business process notation (BPMN) topology specification (TOSCA) standards deployment, respectively. We also present toolchain BPMN, generating proprietary by different BPMN models, specifying actual TOSCA, then enacting deployment. Finally, illustrate case study applying our practice.
